What is the toilet doing?
A toilet that keeps filling needs a different assessment from a bowl that will not empty. Say whether water runs into the bowl continuously, the cistern will not refill or the flush button no longer works.
For a visible leak, describe whether water appears at the cistern, supply connection or base. Do not assume water on the floor has the same cause as a running cistern.
- The cistern keeps filling after a flush.
- The flush is weak or the button does not operate.
- The cistern is slow to fill or does not refill.
- Water appears around the toilet or its connections.
Blocked drain or flushing fault?
If the bowl rises with wastewater or fails to drain, stop flushing and discuss a blocked drain. Repeated flushing adds more water and risks overflow.
If water is escaping from a cistern or connection, use an accessible isolation valve only if you know how and can safely reach it. Avoid contact with wastewater and keep people and pets away from an overflow.
Repair or replace the toilet?
An inlet valve, flush mechanism or seal may be repairable. The condition of the suite, suitable parts and access determine the options. A cracked or damaged fixture needs assessment before further use.
Before choosing a replacement, discuss how it fits the existing water and waste connections. Tell us if the cistern is concealed or access is limited, as that changes the work involved.
Common questions
What information helps with a toilet repair enquiry?
Describe the symptom, when it started and whether the toilet is still usable. Mention a visible brand or model, previous repairs and whether it is the property's only toilet.
Does a running cistern waste water?
Continuous running means water is passing through the toilet between uses. South East Water lists toilet seals and valves among common sources to check when investigating unexplained water use.
