Water leak detection Melbourne

Suspect a hidden water leak? Call 0478 414 129 with your suburb, the signs you have noticed and where they appear.

What signs have you noticed?

A higher water bill, damp patch or sound of water deserves investigation, but none identifies the cause on its own. Think about when the sign appears and whether it changes after rain, showering or using a particular fixture.

South East Water identifies toilets, hot-water units, irrigation and hidden pipework among possible sources of unexplained water use. A damp patch can also have a cause outside the water-supply plumbing.

  • Unexpected water use or continuous-flow alerts.
  • Damp walls, ceilings or flooring.
  • Wet ground without an obvious source.
  • Water sounds when fixtures are not being used.

How is the source checked?

The investigation depends on the symptoms, pipe location and available access. Explain any recent renovations, previous leaks and whether a water authority has already checked the meter or supply.

Ask what the investigation includes and whether locating a leak and repairing it are separate parts of the job. Access through walls, floors or ground depends on where the fault is found; no method removes that possibility in every property.

What if the leak is near the meter?

Tell your water authority if the meter or utility pipework appears to be leaking. For Yarra Valley Water customers, its repair-responsibility guide explains common ownership boundaries and exceptions. Do not dismantle or adjust the meter.

Common questions

Is a visible burst pipe a leak-detection job?

If water is escaping from an obvious pipe failure, describe it as a burst pipe when you call. Detection becomes important where the source or full extent of the leak is uncertain.

Does a high bill prove there is a hidden leak?

No. Changes in use, meter readings and visible fixture leaks also need checking. Have the bill or continuous-flow alert available when discussing the investigation.
